Truck Jackknife Accidents in California

Jackknife truck accidents occur when trucks with separate cabs and trailers fold into a “V-shape” during an accident. Although jackknife accidents occur infrequently, they are some of the most dangerous types of truck accidents that can occur. A truck that starts to jackknife is uncontrollable and can swing and slide and roll very easily on the highway and can cause devastating injuries to the truck driver and vehicles in the truck’s vicinity that may be hit by the out-of-control truck.

Many factors can contribute to the likelihood of a jackknife accident. Some common factors include:

  • Speeding
  • Sudden braking
  • Brake failure from defective or poorly maintained brakes
  • Poor road conditions
  • Steep inclines
  • Unbalanced cargo when not loaded correctly or secured correctly

The trucking industry is strictly regulated by federal laws. There are rules that must be adhered to for every part of a truck company’s operations. Oftentimes trucks are more likely to jackknife when the trucking company does not maintain the truck in proper working order and cuts corners on the repairs or maintenance performed. Truck companies are required to keep their maintenance records for a specified period, which may reveal if the truck company failed to maintain their trucks properly to save money. Failure to inspect or maintain truck brakes is negligence and opens the trucking company up to liability for the damages caused.

Being in a truck accident can be traumatic. If you were in a jackknife truck accident you may be entitled to compensation for the injuries you’ve suffered. Speak to a knowledgeable jackknife truck accident lawyer, who will walk you through the next steps and help you get what you may be entitled to as compensation for your injuries. An attorney can help get the process started.
