Ceres, CA (September 14, 2022) – On Saturday afternoon, September 10, an accident involving a pedestrian and a tractor-trailer was reported in Ceres that killed one person.

The California Highway Patrol (CHP) reported that the accident occurred, at about 4:15 p.m., on Highway 99. CHP reported that a semi-truck, driven by 73-year-old William Hutton, was traveling northbound on Highway 99 approaching Hatch Road when it hit a pedestrian that was walking on the road. The impact caused the pedestrian to sustain major injuries. The driver of the semi-truck pulled over on the side of the road and immediately called 911 for assistance.

The pedestrian was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident. He was identified as Shaun Neuman, 27, of Ceres. The driver of the truck, Hutton, and his passenger, did not sustain any injuries.

The circumstances surrounding the accident are under further investigation by local authorities.

Fatal Truck Accidents in California

California has such beautiful weather a majority of the year that people often take to outdoor activities, including walking, for leisure and exercise. People also walk or ride their bikes around town as a form of economical and environmentally friendly transportation. Unfortunately, there are more pedestrian accidents reported in California than in any other state in the country. Pedestrians are especially vulnerable when involved in an accident with a vehicle and especially if in an accident with a large commercial truck. Pedestrian accidents are not as common as other types of accidents, but when they do occur, they have the gravest outcomes, as there is nothing a pedestrian can do to shield or protect themselves from suddenly being hit.

California’s growing economy brings with it thousands of commercial trucks traveling California’s roads and highways each day. Trucks can be much more difficult to control and maneuver and are frequently in accidents. They are much higher off the ground than passenger vehicles, which makes it very difficult for them to see pedestrians on the road, oftentimes until it’s too late to avoid them. However, all drivers, including commercial truck drivers, owe a duty of care to pedestrians to exercise reasonable caution to avoid causing harm to them. If a pedestrian accident occurs, this duty of care has likely been breached.
