Hit-and-Run Truck Accidents in California

Motorcycles are a very common mode of transportation and are commonly ridden in California for several reasons, including the state’s favorable year-round climate, beautiful scenery, historic roads, and low fuel and maintenance costs. All drivers, including truck drivers, owe a duty of care to each other to operate their vehicles cautiously in order to minimize the risk of danger to the other drivers on the road. Drivers also owe a duty of care to watch for motorcyclists and respect their space.

Thousands of commercial trucks travel on California’s roads each day. The I-15 Freeway is a common truck route running from San Diego through Nevada and up to the Canadian border. The stretch from San Diego to Las Vegas is a long and straight road running through mostly desert. Although conditions and visibility are mostly optimal on this road, many trucks and vehicles are observed to be speeding and engaging in distracted and other forms of negligent driving. As such, the I-15 has been reported to be the 6th most dangerous freeway in the country.

Trucks can be difficult to control and maneuver and have a longer stopping time than other vehicles when emergencies happen. Trucks are frequently in accidents as a result. The increased presence of trucks and motorcycles on California’s roadways has led to an increase in accidents involving the two. Sadly, when trucks and motorcycles are involved in an accident, the motorcyclist often sustains severe injuries or death, due to the vast size disparity between the two vehicles. Motorcyclists are especially vulnerable in an accident since there is nothing surrounding them, like the frame of a car, to shield them from a sudden impact.

When you’re involved in a truck accident and the other party doesn’t stop it makes an already stressful situation, even more difficult. California law states that when an accident occurs, the vehicles must pull off the road, at the scene of the accident. Failing to stop at the scene of an accident is punishable as either a misdemeanor or felony offense. Oftentimes, after the police investigation, the fleeing party is identified and brought to justice.
