Santa Ana, CA (November 15, 2022) – On Tuesday morning, November 15, a big rig truck crash was reported in Santa Ana on Route 55 that resulted in injuries.

The police reported that the accident happened around 8:30 a.m. on Route 55, when a big rig was involved in an accident with multiple other vehicles, for reasons that are still unknown at this time. The accident occurred when a big rig collided with another vehicle on the southbound State Route 55 Freeway at Dyer Road.

After the initial collision, at least 2 additional vehicles were hit. The impact caused the truck driver to lose control of the truck and jackknifed on the highway, which resulted in several lanes of traffic being blocked. Another vehicle overturned during the collision and landed on its roof blocking two lanes of traffic.

Emergency personnel was immediately called to the scene. They arrived shortly after the accident. Paramedics provided medical care to all those who were injured. There is no information at this time about the extent of injuries sustained in the crash.

The circumstances surrounding the accident are under further investigation by local authorities. Traffic was diverted away from this area as the injured were cared for, police investigated, and crews worked to clear the accident.

Truck Jackknife Accidents in California

Jackknife accidents are some of the most dangerous types of truck accidents. Jackknife accidents occur when trucks with separate cabs and trailers are unable to maintain control and fold into a “V-shape” during an accident. A truck that starts to jackknife can swing and slide and roll very easily on the highway and can slide into a large number of other vehicles on crowded highways. This type of accident can cause devastating injuries to the truck driver and vehicles in the truck’s vicinity that may be hit by the out-of-control truck.

Many factors contribute to the likelihood of a jackknife accident. Some include:

  • Speeding
  • Sudden braking
  • Brake failure from defective or poorly maintained brakes
  • Poor road conditions
  • Steep inclines
  • Unbalanced cargo when not loaded correctly or secured correctly

The trucking industry is regulated by federal law, which oversees the industry and establishes regulations that must be adhered to in order to ensure safe operations. Oftentimes trucks are more likely to jackknife when the company does not maintain the truck in proper working order and cuts corners on the repairs or maintenance performed. Truck companies are required to keep their maintenance records for a specified period, which may reveal if the truck company failed to maintain their trucks properly. Failure to inspect or maintain truck brakes is negligence and opens the trucking company up to liability for the damages caused in an accident.

Being in a truck accident can be a stressful experience, with a lasting impact on your life. If you were in a jackknife truck accident you may be entitled to compensation for the injuries and other damages you’ve suffered. Speak to a knowledgeable jackknife truck accident lawyer, who will walk you through the next steps and help you get what you may be entitled to as compensation for your injuries.
