Seal Beach, CA – Motorcyclist Richard Mendoza Killed in Accident with a Big Rig on 405 FWY

Seal Beach, CA (November 16, 2022) – On Thursday morning, November 10, an accident involving a motorcycle and a big rig was reported on the 405 freeway, resulting in serious injury.

The Orange County Sheriff’s Department reported that in the morning around 4:45 a.m. an accident was reported on the northbound 405 freeway, just south of Seal Beach Boulevard. The accident happened when a semi-truck was traveling north on the freeway at the same time as a motorcyclist when they veered into the same space and collided. As a result of the impact, the motorcyclist was violently thrown from his vehicle and landed on the freeway.

Emergency personnel was called to the scene. The driver of the motorcycle suffered severe injuries and sadly died at the scene of the accident. The identity of the victim was later released on Tuesday, November 15 by the Orange County Coroner’s office. The victim was identified as 37-year-old Richard Mendoza of Costa Mesa. The driver of the big rig was uninjured in the accident.

There were delays in the area, and multiple lanes of traffic were closed for a time to allow for paramedics to tend to the injured, police to investigate, and crews to clean up the wreckage.

Police are still investigating the circumstances surrounding the crash and its causes.

We extend our deepest condolences to the deceased victim’s family at this time. Our thoughts are with all those who have been affected by this tragedy.

Fatal Truck Accidents in California

Riding a motorcycle is a favorite pastime of Californians. More than 800,000 motorcycles are registered in the state. Many Californians enjoy riding motorcycles because of California’s favorable year-round climate, beautiful scenery, historic roads, and low fuel and maintenance costs. However, motorcycles can be dangerous. Many times, the other drivers on the road do not see a motorcycle approaching and cross right into their path causing a collision. Motorcyclists are just as entitled to be on the road as any other car or truck. Knowing how common motorcycles are in the state, all drivers need to keep a watchful eye out for motorcycles, to prevent an accident.

Thousands of commercial trucks travel on California’s roads each day, including the 405 freeway, which is a major north-south route traveling through Southern California. It is a major avenue for trucking companies and commuters alike. It is the busiest and most congested freeway in the country and has the highest average daily traffic count of any other freeway. Trucks are very large and have larger blind spots than other vehicles. The number of accidents that occur between trucks and motorcycles has increased steadily over the years. Unfortunately, when motorcycles are hit by trucks, the results are often devastating.
