Truck Accidents in California

Thousands of commercial trucks travel on California’s roads each day. Of course, there are many good and experienced truck drivers who drive their trucks cautiously. However, not all truck drivers have the same experience nor exercise the same amount of caution, and as a result, California’s news headlines are filled with stories of truck accidents.

Every day there is another story of a truck getting in an accident. Accidents happen for many reasons. Many times, the cause of a truck accident is reckless driving behaviors such as distracted driving, speeding, tailgating, driving while fatigued, or impaired driving. Inclement weather, unstable or shifting cargo, and obstacles on the roadway are also contributing factors that can also cause serious accidents.

Trucks are very large and as such, they have much larger blind spots than passenger vehicles. When emergencies happen, and they are required to stop suddenly, trucks also have a much longer stopping time because of their weight. Trucks can weigh up to 80,000 pounds. As such, trucks are slow in responding quickly to situations, whereas on the flip side, motorcycles are very quick at making adjustments and responding to situations.

Trucks and motorcycles need to both watch for each other and by recognizing these differences in response time, if they give each other more space, the goal is that perhaps the number of accidents involving the two may decrease. Because the reality is, the increased presence of both trucks and motorcycles on California’s roads has caused an increase in accidents involving the two. When motorcycles are involved in an accident with a large commercial truck, the motorcyclist often sustains devastating injuries or death.

When it comes to truck accidents, there are very high insurance policies covering these vehicles. Insurance companies have a team of lawyers who are working hard to minimize the amount of money they have to pay out on your claim. They will often offer a settlement offer very early, when your bills are mounding up, hoping you select the initial offer to pay off some of your bills. However, this amount can be drastically less than what you are entitled to receive for your injuries and suffering. A trusted truck accident attorney can evaluate your case and tell you how much your claim may be worth. Talk to an experienced truck accident attorney before accepting any offer from the insurance company.
