Elderly Female Pedestrian Died in Pedestrian Accident With Truck on H Street in South Bay, Chula Vista

CHULA VISTA, CALIFORNIA (July 29, 2025) – A woman in her 80s has tragically died in a Chula Vista truck accident at a South Bay parking structure on H Street.
San Diego County officials are saying that the accident took place around 11:30 AM on Tuesday. A pickup truck was rounding a corner when it hit the victim.
Paramedics were called to the scene to help the elderly woman. She was taken to the hospital with critical injuries. Authorities do not believe that speed or alcohol played a role in the crash.
Despite life-saving measures at the hospital, she was later pronounced dead. A full investigation into the Chula Vista truck accident remains ongoing.
Liability for Chula Vista Truck Accidents
Thousands of pedestrians are killed or seriously injured every year in motor vehicle collisions. Many of these collisions involve larger trucks and SUVs. According to National Public Radio, “The majority of vehicles sold in the U.S. are now SUVs and light trucks, which can have front ends that are often 40 inches or taller. Safety advocates say that’s one reason why pedestrian fatalities are up more than 75% since reaching their lowest point in 2009.” Drivers should take a number of actions to avoid hitting pedestrians.
- Blind Spots: Truck drivers should check their blind spots before making turns at intersections.
- Maintenance: Truck drivers should ensure that their vehicle is routinely inspected and well-maintained.
- Distractions: Truck drivers should continuously scan the road ahead of them and avoid all distractions that could impair their ability to operate a vehicle safely.
Every driver in California must use caution to avoid colliding with a pedestrian in the roadway. Pursuant to California Vehicle Code 21950, the driver of a vehicle shall yield the right-of-way to any pedestrian crossing the roadway within a marked or unmarked crosswalk at an intersection. Even if a pedestrian is outside of a marked crosswalk, this does not relieve a driver from their duty of exercising due care to ensure the safety of any pedestrian on the roadway. If a driver fails to slow down to avoid hitting a pedestrian on the roadway, this could form the basis of a negligence claim.
It is also possible that liability for any collision could extend beyond a driver deemed to be at fault. This is particularly true if a pickup truck or van was involved in a crash. These types of vehicles are regularly used for commercial purposes. In California, employers are held vicariously liable for the wrongful actions of their employees who are operating within the course and scope of their job duties. This may include situations where a vehicle was being used for landscaping, construction, or delivery. It is important that the circumstances surrounding any crash are properly understood.
- Surveillance footage that may have captured the crash should be collected.
- Photos of the accident site should be taken.
- The purpose of any truck driver’s trip should be investigated.
- Medical records related to injuries should be preserved.
In certain circumstances, a city or municipal entity could potentially be liable for a pedestrian collision. In California, a government entity could be liable for a collision that was the result of a dangerous condition on public property. For example, a roadway may have had a deep pothole that caused a driver to lose control of their vehicle. It is important that accident victims understand their rights. The family of any person killed in a car accident may have legal recourse through a wrongful death claim.
