One Killed, Several Injured in Lakeside Semi-Truck Crash

California Highway Patrol Investigating Lakeside Semi-Truck Collision That Killed One Person on State Route 67 by San Vicente Reservoir

When Should You Contact a Truck Accident Lawyer?

LAKESIDE, CALIFORNIA (October 13, 2026) – One person tragically died and three others were seriously injured in a Lakeside semi-truck accident along State Route 67 near San Vicente Reservoir.

San Diego County officials are saying that the incident occurred shortly before 11 AM on Monday morning. One vehicle was reportedly struck by a semi-truck in the lanes of SR 67.

Firefighters and paramedics were called to the scene of the crash to help all of the victims. Three people in their 70s were transported to a local hospital with critical injuries.

Sadly, one person was beyond medical assistance and later pronounced deceased. The CHP closed a section of SR 67 for some time as they continued to investigate the collision.

Liability for San Diego County Truck Accidents

California law requires that all drivers exercise the proper precautions to avoid colliding with vehicles. Pursuant to California Vehicle Code § 22350, “No person shall drive a vehicle upon a highway at a speed greater than is reasonable or prudent having due regard for weather, visibility, the traffic on, and the surface and width of, the highway, and in no event at a speed which endangers the safety of persons or property.” Evaluating liability for any truck accident requires careful consideration of several factors.

  • Speed: The speed of all vehicles involved should be taken into consideration.
  • Conditions: The traffic and weather conditions at the time of the crash are another important factor.
  • Hours of Service: It should also be determined if the truck driver was compliant with federal regulations related to hours of service and rest breaks.
  • Lane Position: Investigators may want to review the lane position of all vehicles involved at the time of impact.

When a truck driver fails to slow down to avoid colliding with any vehicle, this could form the basis of a negligence claim. Consider, for example, Shiver v. Laramee. That case involved a negligence claim that arose from a tractor-trailer truck that hit a car that entered into its lane of traffic. Attorneys for the plaintiff argued that the truck driver had advance warning of the danger ahead of them but failed to slow down sufficiently to avoid the collision.

What to Do After a California Truck Accident

A fully loaded semi-truck can weigh over 80,000 pounds. These vehicles routinely cause catastrophic collisions that leave many people dead each year. According to one report by the NHTSA, commercial trucks killed 5,472 people in 2023 alone. Roughly 70% of the victims were occupants of other vehicles. It is important that several actions are taken after any truck accident in California.

  • Police: The police should be called to the scene of the accident as early as possible so that they can begin an investigation.
  • Witnesses: Any person that may have witnessed the collision should be interviewed early on while their memories are still fresh.
  • Truck Data: The event data recorder from the truck involved should also be collected and preserved. It can contain critical information about how a truck was being driven prior to a crash.
  • Legal Help: Victims of truck accidents or their surviving family members should contact a team experienced in accident reconstruction and negligence claims.

Being injured in any truck accident can be completely overwhelming. Many people are so seriously injured that they may need to take months away from work and also be left with high medical bills. Unfortunately, truck companies and insurance providers are not likely to accept responsibility if someone has seriously been injured in a crash. This is why it is so critical that these incidents are properly investigated by an outside party. The family of any person who died in a truck accident may be able to seek some measure of accountability through a civil action.
