LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA (February 26, 2026) – A pedestrian tragically died in the Los Angeles truck accident on the 101 freeway not far from Lost Hills Road.

Los Angeles County officials are saying the accident took place around 5:57 AM on Monday. A pedestrian was hit by a truck for undetermined reasons.

Paramedics were called to the scene of the collision to help the victim. Sadly, the pedestrian was beyond medical aid and pronounced dead at the scene.

Photos of the accident site showed a disabled truck pulled over to the shoulder of the road. A full investigation into the crash remains ongoing.

Liability for Los Angeles Pedestrian Accidents

Truck drivers must exercise a great deal of caution to avoid colliding with pedestrians. They must also abide by all safety regulations set for commercial drivers. According to California Vehicle Code 22350, “No person shall drive a vehicle upon a highway at a speed greater than is reasonable or prudent having due regard for weather, visibility, the traffic on, and the surface and width of, the highway, and in no event at a speed which endangers the safety of persons or property.” Truck companies should take many steps to avoid pedestrian collisions.

  • Training: Truck companies should provide all of their drivers with extensive training.
  • Maintenance: Truck companies should ensure their vehicles are periodically inspected and well maintained.
  • Left Turns: Truck companies should create routes that avoid as many left turns as possible.
  • Technology: Truck companies should equip their vehicles with technological features, including forward collision avoidance systems.

If a truck driver fails to slow down to avoid colliding with a pedestrian in the road, this could serve as evidence of negligence. Liability for a truck accident could extend to many different entities beyond any driver deemed to be at fault. The company that a truck driver worked for could be held at fault. Employers are typically responsible for the wrongful actions of their workers. However, many truck companies hire their drivers as “independent contractors” to limit their legal exposure for accidents.

Steps to Take After Los Angeles Pedestrian Accidents

Large trucks account for a relatively small number of the total vehicles on the roadway, but they are involved in a disproportionate number of fatal collisions. According to the NHTSA, “Drivers of large trucks involved in fatal traffic crashes in 2023 had the second highest percentage (19.4%) of previously recorded traffic crashes compared to drivers of other vehicle types (motorcycles, 19.8%; passenger cars, 17.0%; and light trucks, 15.5%).” Multiple steps should be taken after any fatal pedestrian accident.

  • The police should be called to the scene of the accident so that they can begin an investigation.
  • All medical records related to the accident should be collected and preserved.
  • Surveillance footage that may have captured the accident should be sought.
  • The family of any person who died in the collision should contact an experienced truck accident attorney.

A fully loaded commercial truck can weigh 80,000 pounds. These vehicles can be extremely dangerous even at lower speeds. Unfortunately, it is relatively common for truck companies to push their drivers to complete deliveries as fast as possible. This can lead to situations where truck drivers begin to develop unsafe habits. The family of any person who died in a collision with a truck is able to seek some measure of accountability through a wrongful death claim.
