BAKERSFIELD, CALIFORNIA (February 3, 2026) – At least nine people were injured in a Bakersfield car accident involving several trucks on the eastbound lanes of Highway 58.

Kern County officials are saying that the accident took place on Wednesday morning. Multiple passenger vehicles and commercial trucks were involved in a massive collision on the highway.

Firefighters and paramedics were called to the scene of the accident to help all the victims. Emergency medical services took a number of different people to the hospital.

Both lanes of the highway were blocked for several hours as crews cleaned up. They worked to remove multiple disabled vehicles.

Investigators are saying that poor weather conditions likely played a role in the crash.

Liability for Bakersfield Car Accidents

Every driver in California must use caution to avoid causing accidents with other vehicles. This necessitates that they maintain a safe distance from all other vehicles ahead of them on the roadway. According to California Vehicle Code 21703, “The driver of a motor vehicle shall not follow another vehicle more closely than is reasonable and prudent, having due regard for the speed of such vehicle and the traffic upon, and the condition of, the roadway.” There are several factors that could contribute to a car accident.

  • Distraction: Drivers may be distracted by looking at their cell phones or other objects.
  • Intoxication: Drivers may have been intoxicated by prescription drugs and other substances.
  • Blindspots: Drivers may have failed to check their blindspots while changing lanes on the highway.
  • Scanning: Drivers may have failed to properly scan the road ahead of them for upcoming hazards.

If a driver fails to slow down to avoid colliding with another vehicle ahead of them, this could be construed as negligence. There is a presumption of negligence on the part of any driver that fails to slow down to avoid hitting a vehicle ahead of them in their own lane of travel. Depending on the facts of any case, liability for car accidents could extend beyond any driver deemed to be at fault. For example, if a truck driver was working at the time of a collision, their employer could be held at fault. Employers are typically liable for the wrongful actions of their workers who were operating within the course and scope of their job duties.

Steps to Take After Bakersfield Car Accidents

Poor weather conditions remain a major cause of car accidents across California and the United States.  According to the U.S. Department of Transportation, “On average, over 3,800 people are killed and over 268,000 people are injured in weather-related crashes each year. (Source: Five-year averages from 2019 to 2023 analyzed by Athey Creek Consultants, based on NHTSA data).” Victims of car accidents should take certain actions to protect their health and legal rights.

  • Medical Treatment: Any person injured in a car accident should seek medical treatment as soon as possible.
  • Surveillance Footage: Surveillance footage that may have captured the accident should be sought.
  • Evidence: All of the physical evidence associated with the crash should be preserved. This includes crash debris left after any collision.
  • Legal Support: Victims of car accidents should contact an experienced personal injury attorney as early as possible. An attorney can take steps to collect evidence and identify all liable parties.

Being injured in a car accident is one of the most difficult experiences that most people will ever go through. Victims are routinely left with catastrophic injuries that impair their ability to work and live. Even after a person’s physical injuries heal, many victims are left with long-term psychological trauma. Any person injured in a Bakersfield car accident may be able to pursue some measure of justice and accountability through a personal injury claim.
