Pedestrian Killed in Oakland Dump Truck Accident

Victim Was Pinned by Dump Truck Near High Street and Coliseum Way in Oakland

Adelanto, CA – Pedestrian Killed in Fatal Tractor-Trailer Crash on US-395

OAKLAND, CALIFORNIA (July 16, 2026) – A 45-year-old man has tragically died in an Oakland dump truck accident at the intersection of High Street and Coliseum Way.

Oakland police officials are saying that the accident took place around 6:30 PM on Tuesday evening. The victim was reportedly pinned and trapped underneath the dump truck after being struck.

Firefighters and paramedics were pulled to the scene to help the victim. Despite life-saving measures, the male pedestrian died due to the severe nature of his injuries.

A preliminary investigation revealed that the dump truck was traveling southbound on High Street before making a turn onto Coliseum Way.

Liability for Oakland Dump Truck Accidents

Every driver operating a motor vehicle in California has a legal obligation to use caution to avoid hitting pedestrians. Drivers must be particularly cautious at intersections. According to California Vehicle Code § 21950, “The driver of a vehicle shall yield the right-of-way to a pedestrian crossing the roadway within any marked crosswalk or within any unmarked crosswalk at an intersection, except as otherwise provided in this chapter.” There are many different factors that make dump trucks dangerous.

  • Blind Spots: Dump trucks have large blind spots that could easily obscure the presence of pedestrians.
  • Weight: Dump trucks weigh tens of thousands of pounds, thereby making even low impact collisions very dangerous.
  • Ground Clearance: Dump trucks have a high ground clearance, increasing the risk of pedestrians being pulled underneath the truck.

When evaluating whether or not a dump truck driver is liable for an accident, it matters whether or not a reasonable person could’ve avoided the crash. Most collisions involving pedestrians are avoidable when drivers are properly scanning the road ahead of them and traveling at a safe speed. Liability for a dump truck collision could extend beyond any specific driver determined to be at fault. The private company or municipal entity that owned the dump truck could also be legally responsible.

Steps to Take After Oakland Dump Truck Accidents

Being involved in any type of accident with the dump truck can be traumatic for victims with lasting injuries. These accidents have risen in recent years. According to the Engineering News Record, “Serious accidents involving dump trucks and ready-mix concrete delivery trucks continue to edge up, part of a persistent, multi-industry problem with poor driving habits that has not yet responded to increased fleet and vehicle insurance premiums.”  Multiple steps should be taken after any dump truck collision.

  • The police report created after the collision should be reviewed.
  • All medical records related to the incident should be carefully examined.
  • The safety record of the dump truck driver involved should be scrutinized.
  • The victims should consult with an experienced truck accident attorney.

For the most part, dump truck accidents are partially preventable. This is particularly true when a dump truck or other vehicle is making a left turn. Left turns are among the most dangerous maneuvers that drivers can make. Some estimates suggest that drivers are nearly 10 times more likely to be involved in a collision while making a left turn as opposed to a right turn. The family of any person who died due to the negligent actions of a dump truck driver may be able to achieve some level of justice and transparency through a civil action.
