Pedestrian Died in San Bernardino County Box Truck Accident

Male Pedestrian, 40, Died Following Collision With Box Truck By the Intersection of Air Expressway and Adelanto Road in Adelanto

2/18 Los Angeles, CA – One Killed in Fatal Pedestrian Crash Involving Truck on E 48th St

ADELANTO, CALIFORNIA (October 19, 2026) – A 40-year-old male pedestrian has tragically died in an Adelanto box truck accident near the intersection of Air Expressway and Adelanto Road.

San Bernardino County officials are saying that the collision took place around 12:07 AM on Friday. The driver of the box truck was heading eastbound on Air Expressway when the driver-side mirror collided with a pedestrian who was walking.

Paramedics were called to the scene of the accident to help the injured victim. However, the 40-year-old pedestrian was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash.

The box truck driver remained at the scene. They cooperated with police. A full investigation remains ongoing at this time.

Liability for Adelanto Pedestrian Accidents

California law requires that all drivers use reasonable caution to avoid striking any pedestrian that they encounter. Even if a pedestrian is outside of a marked crosswalk, this does not remove a driver’s duty of care to slow down. According to California Vehicle Code 22350, “No person shall drive a vehicle upon a highway at a speed greater than is reasonable or prudent having due regard for weather, visibility, the traffic on, and the surface and width of, the highway, and in no event at a speed which endangers the safety of persons or property.” There are a number of factors that could contribute to any truck accident.

  • Speeding: A large portion of fatal pedestrian collisions involve drivers who were traveling too fast for the prevailing conditions.
  • Fatigue: Many pedestrian collisions involve drivers that were fatigued.
  • Intoxication: Driver intoxication remains one of the leading contributing factors to pedestrian accidents.
  • Low Visibility: Pedestrian collisions tend to be more likely during the early morning and late evening hours when visibility is reduced.

If a truck driver fails to slow down to avoid colliding with any pedestrian in the roadway, this could serve as evidence of negligence. Consider, for example, Servito v. Lynch & Sons Van & Storage Co. That case involved a pedestrian who was injured after being struck by a moving van after stepping from behind a bakery truck. The court explained that a vehicle’s right of way outside of a crosswalk is not absolute. The mere presence of a pedestrian in a roadway does not eliminate that driver’s duty of care.

What To Do After An Adelanto Pedestrian Accident

Pedestrians lack the protection of enclosed vehicles and are substantially more likely to be killed or seriously injured in the event of a crash. According to the NHTSA, “In 2023 there were 7,314 pedestrians killed in traffic crashes, a 3.7- percent decrease from the 7,593 pedestrian fatalities in 2022. In 2023 there were an estimated 68,244 pedestrians injured in traffic crashes, a 1.3-percent increase from 67,341 pedestrians injured in 2022.” Multiple actions should be taken after any truck accident.

  • Police Report: The police should be called to the scene of the accident as soon as possible so that they can begin investigating.
  • Driver Record: The safety record of the truck driver involved should be carefully scrutinized.
  • Surveillance Footage: Any surveillance footage captured by the truck or nearby businesses should be preserved.
  • Independent Investigation: The family of any person who died in a truck accident should request an independent investigation by a team experienced in wrongful death claims.

Truck accidents tend to be highly preventable. In many cases, they involve drivers that were not sufficiently scanning the road ahead of them. Unfortunately, truck companies have demonstrated time and again that they will do everything in their power to deny responsibility when they’re involved in a major crash. It is important for the victims of these collisions and their families to understand that they do have rights. They are able to seek some measure of accountability through a wrongful death claim.
