San Bernardino County officials are saying that the accident took place around 9:32 AM on March 16. A Robertson’s Transport semi-truck was pulling a tank trailer when it was involved in a collision with a passenger sedan.
The force of the impact caused major damage to the right side of the sedan. Part of the roof was also crushed downward. Both vehicles ultimately came to rest by the side of the roadway.
Paramedics were called to the scene of the accident to help all of the victims. Sadly, two people died due to the severe nature of their injuries. A full investigation into the crash remains ongoing at this time.
Liability for Lucerne Valley Semi-Truck Accidents
Truck drivers must constantly operate at a safe speed to avoid hitting other vehicles. According to California Vehicle Code 22350, “No person shall drive a vehicle upon a highway at a speed greater than is reasonable or prudent having due regard for weather, visibility, the traffic on, and the surface and width of, the highway, and in no event at a speed which endangers the safety of persons or property.” Multiple factors can make trucks uniquely dangerous.
- Weight: Commercial trucks can weigh up to 80,000 pounds and can be extremely dangerous even at lower speeds.
- Stopping Distance: Commercial trucks take substantially longer to stop at freeway speeds than other vehicles.
- Blind Spots: Commercial trucks have large blind spots that can obscure the presence of smaller vehicles.
If a truck driver fails to slow down to avoid a collision with another vehicle, this may be considered negligence. The specific situations leading up to the crash really matter. A number of collisions involve truck drivers that make unsafe turns in the path of other vehicles. Liability for any collision could extend beyond any particular driver. For example, the company that a truck driver worked for could bear some legal responsibility for the crash. Under California law, employers are typically liable for the negligent conduct of their workers who were operating within the course and scope of their job duties.
Common Injuries Associated With Lucerne Valley Truck Accidents
Truck accidents remain a major cause of preventable injury and death across California and the United States. According to the UCI Institute of Transportation Studies, “Large trucks are indispensable for freight transportation and economic growth, but create notable safety challenges on roadways. In California, despite representing only 2.5% of the vehicle population and 5.6% of vehicle miles traveled, large trucks accounted for 9.1% of fatal crashes in 2020, causing 372 deaths and 8,350 injuries. Victims of truck accidents tend to suffer very serious injuries.
- Victims of truck accidents routinely suffer broken bones, particularly in their wrists and arms.
- The impact of a truck accident can leave victims with major organ damage.
- If a person hits their head against any part of their car after an accident, they could easily suffer a traumatic brain injury.
- Spinal cord injuries are one of the most serious injuries involved in truck accidents. These can leave victims with temporary or permanent paralysis.
Even after a person’s physical injuries completely heal, many victims are left with long-term psychological injuries. It is important for victims of truck accidents to understand that they are protected by a number of laws. In particular, they’re able to see some measure of accountability and transparency through a civil claim. This right extends to the surviving family members of any person killed due to the negligent actions of a truck driver. They are able to pursue justice through a wrongful death claim.
