La Mesa, CA (November 19, 2022) – On Friday morning, November 18, one person was tragically killed following an accident with a semi-truck on Interstate 8 in La Mesa.
The California Highway Patrol (CHP) reported that the accident occurred, around 11 a.m., on the westbound lanes of Interstate 8, near Grossmont Center mall. This is a developing story, and the details of the accident are still being investigated to determine the exact cause. For unknown reasons at this time, a passenger in a vehicle was ejected from the car he was a passenger in. He landed in the roadway and was subsequently struck by a semi-truck. It’s not clear if there was an initial collision involving the vehicle that caused the passenger to be ejected.
Emergency personnel was immediately called to the scene. Paramedics arrived to find that the man hit by the semi-truck, had suffered catastrophic injuries and died at the scene of the accident. He has been described as a 26-year-old Santa Ana resident. His identity has not been released at this time. There is no indication that anyone else was injured as a result of the accident.
The circumstances surrounding the accident are under further investigation by local authorities. The officials blocked lanes of the Interstate for some time as the accident was cleared and investigated.
We extend our deepest condolences to the family of the deceased victims at this time. Our thoughts are with all those who have been affected by this tragedy.
Fatal Truck Accidents in California
California’s highways are filled with trucks as many of California’s businesses rely heavily on truck transportation to deliver goods and services. California’s roads and highways are already congested, and the added trucks further increase the buildup of vehicles. Truck accidents frequently occur in California. Drivers need to be extra cautious when driving around trucks and be on guard to try to prevent an accident. Since tractor-trailers are much larger than other vehicles, when they are involved in accidents with large commercial trucks, the injuries that occur are often severe or fatal.
When someone you love has died as a result of another person’s negligence, the surviving family members can file a wrongful death claim on their loved one’s behalf against the party responsible for the death. The law dictates who can file the claim, but typically it would be someone in a close familial relationship, such as a spouse, child, parent, or sibling. The family members pursuing the lawsuit are seeking compensation for the loss of their loved one. To be awarded compensation, three things need to be proven, which include:
- Their family member has died
- Their family member’s death was caused by the negligent actions of another person
- They have suffered a financial loss as a result of the wrongful death, which can include:
- Medical expenses incurred by the deceased between the time of their accident and before their death
- Funeral expenses or burial expenses
- Lost future income and benefits of the deceased relied upon by the surviving family members
- Mental Distress as a result of the loss
- Loss of companionship and support
