Adult, Child Killed in Hemet Valley Car Accident With CAL FIRE Truck in the San Bernardino National Forest

Truck Accident Fire Scaled

HEMET VALLEY, CALIFORNIA (June 8, 2026) – Two people have tragically died in a Hemet Valley CAL FIRE truck accident in the San Bernardino National Forest east of Highway 74.

San Bernardino County officials are saying that the collision took place on Friday. The fire engine was responding to some type of vegetation fire in the area, and it was involved in a collision with a passenger vehicle.

The force of the impact crushed the left side of the passenger vehicle. California Highway Patrol and paramedics were called to the scene of the crash to help the victims.

One person was pronounced dead at the scene. A 10-year-old child was taken to the hospital in critical condition.

Sadly, that child was later pronounced dead at the hospital. A full investigation into the cause of the crash remains ongoing at this time.

Liability for Hemet Valley Truck Accidents

Emergency responders have a legal obligation to exercise due care to avoid collisions. Many collisions are caused by emergency drivers that are speeding. According to California Vehicle Code 22350, “No person shall drive a vehicle upon a highway at a speed greater than is reasonable or prudent having due regard for weather, visibility, the traffic on, and the surface and width of, the highway, and in no event at a speed which endangers the safety of persons or property.” There are many other factors that could contribute to truck accidents.

  • Poor Weather: Drivers are substantially more likely to be involved in collisions during periods of inclement weather.
  • Distracted Driving: Many fatal collisions involve drivers that are distracted by their phones or other objects.
  • Fatigue: Driving while fatigued can be just as dangerous as driving while intoxicated.

When a fire truck or other emergency vehicle is not responding to an actual emergency with their lights and sirens on, they must obey all traffic laws like any other driver. If a truck driver fails to slow down to avoid colliding with another vehicle, this could serve as evidence of negligence. Depending on the unique facts of any case, there could be several sources of liability for any crash. In particular, the municipal entity that owned a fire truck could also be liable for a crash. Employers can be vicariously liable for the negligent actions of their workers who are operating within the course and scope of their job duties.

Steps To Take After Hemet Valley Truck Accidents

A large number of people are seriously injured or killed each year in accidents involving emergency vehicles. According to the National Safety Council, “In 2024, 225 people died in crashes involving emergency vehicles. More than half of these deaths were occupants of non-emergency vehicles (56%). Deaths among pedestrians accounted for 24% of the total, while emergency vehicle drivers represented 9%, and emergency vehicle passengers accounted for about 8% of the deaths.” It is important that certain actions are taken after any accident with a CAL FIRE truck.

  • Trip Purpose: The nature and purpose of a fire truck’s trip should be scrutinized. It matters whether or not a fire truck was responding to an emergency.
  • Medical Records: All medical records related to the accident should be sought and preserved. They can help reveal how an accident took place.
  • Police Report: The police report created after the crash should be reviewed. These reports can be very informative, but they can also contain errors.
  • Independent Review: The family of any person killed in a truck accident should seek an independent review by a team experienced in accident reconstruction.

Fire trucks can be particularly dangerous. These trucks can weigh tens of thousands of pounds. They can be lethal even at lower speeds. Unfortunately, emergency responders will almost never accept responsibility when they cause a fatal collision. This is why it is so important that these incidents are properly investigated by an outside party. The victims of these collisions are also protected by a number of rights. They are able to seek some measure of accountability through a civil claim. The family of any person killed in a truck accident is able to seek some measure of accountability through a wrongful death claim.
