California Highway Patrol Investigating Deadly Boyle Heights Collisions That Injured More Than a Dozen People on the 5 Freeway

BOYLE HEIGHTS, LOS ANGELES (December 30, 2025) – One person has tragically died, and 15 others were injured in a Boyle Heights semi-truck accident on the southbound lane of the 5 freeway.
Los Angeles County officials are saying that the accident took place around 5:01 AM on Sunday. A semi-truck was heading down the road when it was involved in a collision with multiple vehicles.
Firefighters and paramedics were called to the scene of the collision to help the victims. One person died due to the severe nature of their injuries.
An estimated 15 people sustained injuries. Of those 15, 10 were sent to hospitals to receive treatment. It remains unclear what caused the collision.
Liability for Boyle Heights Semi-Truck Accidents
Semi-truck drivers are required to obtain a commercial license and must operate with a great deal of care to avoid causing accidents. According to California Vehicle Code 22350, “No person shall drive a vehicle upon a highway at a speed greater than is reasonable or prudent having due regard for weather, visibility, the traffic on, and the surface and width of, the highway, and in no event at a speed which endangers the safety of persons or property.” Many other factors could contribute to a semi-truck crash.
- Following Distance: Semi-truck drivers are much more likely to crash if they fail to maintain a safe following distance with the vehicles ahead of them.
- Driver Fatigue: Semi-truck drivers are often asked to work for long hours and may naturally become fatigued. Truck drivers are required to take periodic breaks throughout the day and limit the number of hours that they are actually on the road.
- Inclement Weather: Poor weather conditions can substantially increase the amount of time it takes for a truck driver to come to a safe stop. Accidents are much more likely during inclement weather.
- Vehicle System Failures: Semi-trucks have a high utilization rate and require constant maintenance. In particular, poorly maintained tires could easily contribute to a blowout and a catastrophic collision.
If a truck driver fails to slow down to avoid colliding with vehicles ahead of them, this could form the basis of a negligence claim. There is a presumption of negligence on the part of any driver that rear-ends a vehicle in their own lane of traffic. Moreover, the company that they work for can also be held at fault. Generally speaking, employers can be held vicariously liable for the wrongful actions of their employees who are working within the course and scope of their job duties.
Steps to Take After Boyle Heights Truck Accidents
Thousands of people are killed or seriously injured in accidents with commercial trucks every year. According to the National Safety Council, “In 2023, 5,375 large trucks were involved in a fatal crash, an 8.4% decrease from 2022 but a 43% increase in the last 10 years. The involvement rate per 100 million large-truck miles traveled is down 8% from 2022, but up 22% in the last 10 years.” Any person injured in a semi-truck accident should take certain measures to protect their rights.
- Medical Treatment: Seeking medical treatment early on is critical. Many of the injuries associated with a truck accident will not be immediately obvious. Moreover, failing to seek timely treatment could jeopardize a legal claim down the road.
- Evidence Preservation: All of the evidence associated with the accident should be carefully collected and preserved. This will include any photos of the accident site.
- Limit What You Say: It is best to limit what you say after any truck accident. Don’t admit fault or post about the accident on social media.
- Legal Guidance: Victims should seek the guidance of an experienced truck accident attorney. An attorney can evaluate the unique facts of your case and let you know what your legal options are.
Truck accidents can be highly disruptive and traumatic. Many people are left with life-changing injuries that impair their ability to work or even perform daily activities. To make matters worse, truck drivers and their insurance providers will virtually never admit fault for collisions. It is far more likely that they will blame the victim or third parties. Any person injured in a truck accident may be able to seek some measure of accountability through a personal injury claim. This right extends to the surviving family member of any person who died in a truck accident.
