California Highway Patrol Investigating Yountville Semi-Truck Accident on Highway 29 by Hoffman Lane

YOUNTVILLE, CALIFORNIA (April 14, 2026) – A pedestrian has tragically died in a Yountville semi-truck accident along Highway 29 just south of Hoffman Lane.
Napa County officials are saying the accident took place on Tuesday afternoon. A semi truck was traveling down the highway when it was involved in a collision with a pedestrian near the right shoulder.
Paramedics were called to the scene of the accident to help the injured victim. Sadly, they were beyond medical aid and pronounced dead at the scene.
The truck driver involved in the crash remained at the scene and operated with California Highway Patrol. A full investigation into the crash remains ongoing at this time.
Liability for Yountville Semi-Truck Accidents
Semi-truck drivers must use caution to avoid colliding with pedestrians and other drivers. This requires that they always travel at a safe speed. According to California Vehicle Code 22350, “No person shall drive a vehicle upon a highway at a speed greater than is reasonable or prudent having due regard for weather, visibility, the traffic on, and the surface and width of, the highway, and in no event at a speed which endangers the safety of persons or property.” Trucks can be particularly dangerous for several reasons.
- Blind Spots: Commercial trucks have large blind spots that can obscure the presence of pedestrians and smaller vehicles.
- Stopping Distance: Commercial trucks have a much longer stopping distance than passenger vehicles. A fully loaded truck traveling freeway speeds can take the length of two football fields to come to a stop.
- Front End: Trucks have a high center of gravity, which can lead to pedestrians being pulled underneath the vehicle before being run over.
If a truck driver fails to slow down to avoid colliding with a pedestrian in the roadway, they could be held at fault for the collision. Even if a pedestrian is stationary in the middle of a road, this does not relieve a driver of their responsibility to use caution to avoid collisions. Liability for a collision could extend beyond any particular driver. The company that a truck driver worked for could also be liable for the collision. Employers in California can be vicariously liable for the wrongful actions of their workers who were operating within the course and scope of their job duties.
Steps to Take After Yountville Semi-Truck Accidents
Far too many people are killed or seriously injured every year in truck accidents across California and the United States. According to the UCI Institute of Transportation Studies, “In California, despite representing only 2.5% of the vehicle population and 5.6% of vehicle miles traveled, large trucks accounted for 9.1% of fatal crashes in 2020, causing 372 deaths and 8,350 injuries.” Multiple actions should be taken after any semi-truck accident.
- The police should be called to the scene of the accident to help the victim.
- All medical records related to injuries should be collected.
- The event data recorder of the truck involved should be reviewed.
- The family of any person who died should seek the guidance of a team experienced in accident reconstruction and negligence claims.
The vast majority of truck accidents are preventable. They tend to be the result of preventable safety lapses. This can include situations where drivers are not properly scanning the road ahead of them. Part of the problem is that many truck companies often push their drivers to complete delivery routes on unrealistic timelines. The family of any person who died in a truck accident may be able to pursue some measure of accountability through a civil claim.
