Driver Arrested After Teen Ejected From BMW Before Being Hit by Box Truck in San Leandro on Interstate Highway 880

SAN LEANDRO, CALIFORNIA (May 13, 2026) – A teenager has tragically died in a San Leandro car accident after being ejected from a BMW on Interstate Highway 880.
San Leandro police officials are saying that the accident took place around 11 AM on Sunday. A BMW 535i sedan was traveling northbound on the interstate when it was involved in a collision with a Honda Accord.
The force of the impact caused a teenage girl to be ejected from the rear passenger seat. A box truck traveling in the same direction was not able to slow down in time and subsequently struck the victim.
Paramedics were called to the scene of the collision to help all of the victims. Sadly, the teenage girl was pronounced dead at the scene.
The adult driver for the BMW and a juvenile passenger both allegedly fled from the accident scene. One person was left inside of the BMW with injuries.
That person was taken to a local area hospital along with the driver of the Honda Accord. Police have since arrested the 19-year-old driver of the BMW at his home.
A full investigation of the circumstances leading up to the collision is ongoing.
Liability for San Leandro Box Truck Accidents
Driver intoxication remains one of the leading causes of preventable car accidents in the United States. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Association, “Every day, about 32 people in the United States die in drunk-driving crashes — that’s one person every 44 minutes. In 2024, 11,904 people died in alcohol-impaired driving traffic deaths.” Even small amounts of alcohol can substantially impair a person’s ability to operate their vehicle safely.
- Drivers may experience a decline in visual function while intoxicated.
- Drivers may have reduced coordination and a decreased ability to track moving objects while intoxicated.
- Drivers may have poor muscle coordination and a harder time detecting dangers while intoxicated.
- Drivers may have a reduced ability to maintain lane position and brake while intoxicated.
Drivers have a legal obligation to exercise due care to avoid collisions. This necessitates that they are traveling a safe speed at all times. According to California Vehicle Code 22350, no person shall operate a motor vehicle at a speed greater than would be reasonable or prudent given the prevailing road conditions. If a driver fails to slow down to avoid hitting another vehicle, this could serve as evidence of negligence.
Liability for a car accident could extend to multiple parties. Among other things, the company that owned a box truck could also be held at fault. In California, employers can be vicariously liable for the negligent actions of their workers who were operating within the course and scope of their job duties. However, truck companies will often hire their drivers as independent contractors to limit their legal exposure in the event of a crash. It is important that evidence is properly preserved after any truck accident.
- The police report created after the accident should be preserved.
- The result of any blood sample taken from any allegedly intoxicated driver should be sought.
- Any surveillance footage that may have captured the collision should also be collected.
- Eyewitnesses should be interviewed as early as possible while their memories are still fresh.
- The family of any person who died in a pedestrian collision should seek the guidance of a team experienced in accident reconstruction and negligence claims.
Car accidents are often highly preventable. In many situations, they involve drivers who are intoxicated or otherwise failing to abide by traffic regulations. Many of these collisions involve liability on the part of several different entities. This is why it is so important that any multi-vehicle collision be thoroughly investigated by an outside party. The family of any person who died in a box truck accident is able to seek some measure of transparency and accountability through a civil action.
