NEVADA COUNTY, CALIFORNIA (December 8, 2025) – Two truck drivers have tragically died in a Nevada County head-on semi-truck accident on Highway 20 not far from Rex Reservoir Road.
Nevada County officials are saying that the incident took place around 11:00 AM on Wednesday morning. For undetermined reasons, two big rig trucks crashed head-on into one another.
A third vehicle identified as a pickup truck was also involved in the collision. Firefighters and paramedics were called to the scene of the collision to help all of the victims.
Sadly, both big rig drivers were killed in the crash. California Highway Patrol closed Highway 20 between Grass Valley and Penn Valley as they investigated.
Liability for Nevada County Head-On Collisions
Truck drivers are required to obtain a commercial driver’s license. They’re expected to operate their vehicles with a great deal of caution to avoid needlessly causing accidents. Pursuant to California Vehicle Code 22107, “No person shall turn a vehicle from a direct course or move right or left upon a roadway until such movement can be made with reasonable safety and then only after the giving of an appropriate signal in the manner provided in this chapter in the event any other vehicle may be affected by the movement.” There are several factors that could contribute to any truck accident.
- Speed: Truck drivers are substantially more likely to lose control of their vehicle at higher speeds, especially as they are heading around curves in the roadway.
- Fatigue: Truck drivers are often pushed to work long hours and may naturally become fatigued.
- Vehicle System Failures: Truck accidents are often caused by failures of component parts within the vehicle. This can include the brakes or the tires on the vehicle.
- Driver Distraction: Any type of distraction can have lethal consequences for truck operators.
If a truck driver crosses into opposing lanes of traffic and collides with another vehicle, this could form the basis of a negligence claim. There is a presumption of negligence on the part of any driver that leaves their own lane of traffic prior to a collision. Liability for a truck accident could extend beyond any driver deemed to be at fault. For example, the company that a truck driver worked for could potentially be held at fault. Generally speaking, employers could be held vicariously liable for the wrongful actions of their workers.
Steps to Take After Nevada County Truck Accidents
A fully loaded semi-truck can weigh over 80,000 lbs. These vehicles can be incredibly dangerous. According to the IIHS, “Most deaths in large truck crashes are passenger vehicle occupants. The main problem is the vulnerability of people traveling in smaller vehicles. Trucks often weigh 20-30 times as much as passenger cars and are taller with greater ground clearance, which can result in smaller vehicles underriding trucks in crashes.” It is important that certain actions are taken after any truck accident.
- Police: The police should be called to the scene so that they can begin an investigation.
- Evidence: Physical evidence left at the scene should be collected and preserved.
- Photos: Lots of photos of the accident site should be taken. They can help reveal what went wrong.
- Legal Review: Victims and surviving family members should seek the legal guidance of personal injury attorneys.
Truck accidents are often highly preventable. They can also be disorienting for victims. Many people are left with life-altering injuries. Families may need to contend with the sudden loss of a loved one. It is important for the victims of truck accidents to understand that they do have legal protections. They are able to seek some measures of accountability through a civil claim. This extends to the family of any person killed in a crash.
