Semi-Truck Driver Making Left Turn Involved In Fatal Indio Collision With Motorcyclist

INDIO, CALIFORNIA (November 7, 2024) – A motorcyclist has tragically died in an Indio truck accident near the intersection of Indio Boulevard and Tamarisk Avenue.
Riverside County officials are saying that the incident took place around 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday. A semi-truck appears to have made a left turn directly into the path of a motorcyclist.
The motorcycle driver was not able to slow down in time and collided with the left side of the semi-truck. Paramedics were called to the scene of the collision in order to help the victim.
Despite lifesaving measures, the motorcyclist died due to his injuries. A full investigation into the crash remains ongoing at this time.
Liability For Indio Motorcycle Accidents
Thousands of people are killed or seriously injured every year in truck accidents. According to the National Safety Council, “In 2022, 5,837 large trucks were involved in a fatal crash, an 1.8% increase from 2021 and a 49% increase in the last 10 years. The involvement rate per 100 million large-truck miles traveled is up 3% from 2021, and up 24% in the last 10 years.” There are a number of factors that can lead semi-trucks to be particularly dangerous.
- Semi-trucks have large blind spots that can easily obscure the presence of smaller vehicles.
- Semi-trucks have a wide turning radius, which can increase the odds of a side-impact collision.
- Semi-trucks have a high center of gravity, which can lead to smaller vehicles being pulled underneath in the event of a collision.
All drivers have a legal obligation to exercise due care in order to avoid collisions. A number of accidents involve truck drivers who made dangerous left turns. Pursuant to California Vehicle Code 21801, the driver of any vehicle intending to turn left must first yield the right-of-way to any driver that is close enough so as to pose a hazard. If a truck driver makes a left turn into the path of a motorcyclist, this could form the basis of a negligence claim.
Depending on the facts of any case, there could be numerous sources of liability for a truck accident. The company that a truck driver worked for could be held at fault. Generally speaking, companies are liable for the wrongful actions of their employees – insofar as those employees were working within the course and scope of their job duties. However, truck companies will often hire their workers as “independent contractors” to evade liability for crashes. It is important that certain steps are taken after any accident.
- Eyewitnesses should be interviewed.
- Surveillance footage should be sought.
- Accident reconstruction may need to be performed.
- An experienced truck accident attorney should be contacted.
The vast majority of truck accidents are preventable. These collisions often involve truck drivers who were fatigued or distracted. In fact, roughly 1 in 10 truck drivers involved in a fatal collision reported feeling under pressure from their employer. It is important that victims of truck accidents understand that they do have rights. In particular, the family of any person who died in a truck accident may be able to seek some measure of justice through a civil claim.
